Summer is a great time of year to get out and have some fun with our pups. It is important to keep them cool while outside. Here are some fun ways to do just that.

Playtime in a kiddie pool

A plastic kiddie pool is a great way to entertain your dogs. Add water, balls and other toys and let them splash around all afternoon. A lot of water is not necessary. A few inches is all that would be needed to cool your pup off. You could also add a sprinkler for more fun.

Make treat-filled molds

Fill a shallow tray or bowl with water or chicken broth. You can add some pet-friendly fruit or veggies such as blueberries or green beans or even pieces of chicken. Try a bone shaped mold too! Freeze and remove from mold. This will keep your dog busy and hydrated.

Go to a dog beach

Many dogs love to play in the surf. Be sure to bring a ball or frisbee and let your pup frolic on the shoreline. A doggie swim vest might be a good idea, just in case! Make sure to have plenty of fresh water with you as well.

Limit daytime walks

While walking is great for both you and your dog, it is best to keep your walks to early morning or late evening. The asphalt heats up very quickly and can stay very hot into the evening hours. Protect your dogs paws. If it is too hot for you to walk barefoot, it is too hot for your dogs.

Do not leave your dog in the car

Even on a day which you might think is cooler, it can still be too hot for your dog. Temperatures rise very quickly in a car, even with the windows cracked. Please see The Humane Society for important information.

Summertime flies by, so get out there and enjoy.
